The <a href=\"https:\/\/content.nejm.org\/cgi\/content\/short\/360\/1\/20\">article<\/a> reports that after four weeks, patients who received oral antibiotic had an absolute reduction of mortality of 2.9% compared to those who did not receive this preventative treatment. Moreover, those who received both oral and intravenous antibiotics had an absolute reduction of mortality of 2.9% compared with the control group.<\/p>\n<p>These results add a new twist to the debate over the use\u2014or overuse\u2014of antibiotics by medical professionals: Drug-resistant bacteria are a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/media\/pressrel\/r061019.htm?s_cid=mediarel_r061019_x\">growing problem<\/a> in health care centers worldwide. To reduce deaths from these \u2018superbug\u2019 infections, experts have urged doctors to use antibiotics judiciously instead of prescribing them willy-nilly.<\/p>\n<p>So is prophylactic administration of antibiotics the best solution for preventing <span class=\"caps\">ICU<\/span> patient deaths from hospital-acquired bacterial infections? While this may be a good short-term solution, I think that it merely puts a temporary bandage on <a href=\"https:\/\/esciencenews.com\/articles\/2008\/06\/03\/can.we.wipe.out.mrsa\">underlying problems<\/a> with hospital protocols.
