And while we are very interested in whether or not  &#8220;percutaneous interventions to remove thrombi in the popliteal, femoral, or iliac veins, when performed in conjunction with anticoagulant therapy is [sic] better than anticoagulant therapy alone in preventing recurrent venous thromboembolism&#8221;, what we really want to know is: why is it called the <span class=\"caps\">TORPEDO<\/span> study?<\/p>\n<p>In this case, it stands for &#8220;Thrombus Obliteration by Rapid Percutaneous Endovenous Intervention (<span class=\"caps\">PEVI<\/span>) in Deep Venous Occlusion&#8221;, and if you browse the <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/\">database of clinical trials<\/a> maintained by the US government, there&#8217;s plenty of other amusing acronyms to be had.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nWho wouldn&#8217;t want to tell one&#8217;s colleagues that you&#8217;re working on the <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT00122356?id=batman&#038;rank=1\">BATMAN<\/a> project? That&#8217;s much more glamorous than explaining to your mates you can&#8217;t join them at the pub because you are pulling another late shift at the lab to analyze data for the &#8220;Bisphosphonate and Anastrozole Trial &#8211; Bone Maintenance Algorithm Assessment&#8221; study.<\/p>\n<p>Think of an animal or adjective with positive connotations, and chances are, there&#8217;s a study attached to it. The full Greco-Roman pantheon is represented (<a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT00174785?id=athena&#038;rank=2\">ATHENA<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT00523315?id=apollo&#038;rank=1\">APOLLO<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT00212797?id=hermes&#038;rank=1\">HERMES<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT00514501?id=zeus&#038;rank=1\">ZEUS<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT00239681?id=jupiter&#038;rank=1\">JUPITER<\/a>, to name a few). There aren&#8217;t a whole lot of figures from other faiths, but there is an <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT01078168?id=adam&#038;rank=1\">ADAM<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT00919087?id=eve&#038;rank=1\">EVE<\/a>, as well as a <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT00932828?id=devil&#038;rank=1\">DEVIL<\/a>. If it&#8217;s imaginary creatures you&#8217;re looking for, there&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT00769171?id=dragon&#038;rank=1\">DRAGON<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT01016886?id=manticore&#038;rank=1\">MANTICORE<\/a> in this bestiary, but no UNICORN, surprisingly.<\/p>\n<p>We have to give extra credit to those researchers who created proper acronyms (like &#8220;Angina With Extremely Serious Operative Mortality Evaluation&#8221;, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/11451264\">AWESOME<\/a>) as opposed to those who fudged their abbreviations (we&#8217;re looking at you, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/cdrh_docs\/pdf2\/P020009c.pdf\">VICTORY<\/a>, which we would in no way ever guess stood for  &#8220;electi<strong>v<\/strong>e and acute stent<strong>i<\/strong>ng of <strong>c<\/strong>oronary ar<strong>t<\/strong>eries <strong>o<\/strong>n Exp<strong>r<\/strong>ess\u2122 [coronary stent] s<strong>y<\/strong>stem&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>But really, all we&#8217;re asking for is some minimal effort. At least 25 trials lay claim to <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/results?term=&#038;recr=&#038;rslt=&#038;type=&#038;cond=&#038;intr=&#038;outc=&#038;lead=&#038;spons=&#038;id=smart&#038;state1=&#038;cntry1=&#038;state2=&#038;cntry2=&#038;state3=&#038;cntry3=&#038;locn=&#038;gndr=&#038;rcv_s=&#038;rcv_e=&#038;lup_s=&#038;lup_e=\">SMART<\/a>, five are called <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/results?term=&#038;recr=&#038;rslt=&#038;type=&#038;cond=&#038;intr=&#038;outc=&#038;lead=&#038;spons=&#038;id=hope&#038;state1=&#038;cntry1=&#038;state2=&#038;cntry2=&#038;state3=&#038;cntry3=&#038;locn=&#038;gndr=&#038;rcv_s=&#038;rcv_e=&#038;lup_s=&#038;lup_e=\">HOPE<\/a>, and six are called <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/results?term=&#038;recr=&#038;rslt=&#038;type=&#038;cond=&#038;intr=&#038;outc=&#038;lead=&#038;spons=&#038;id=cure&#038;state1=&#038;cntry1=&#038;state2=&#038;cntry2=&#038;state3=&#038;cntry3=&#038;locn=&#038;gndr=&#038;rcv_s=&#038;rcv_e=&#038;lup_s=&#038;lup_e=\">CURE<\/a>. There&#8217;s even one double-dipper, <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/show\/NCT00699920?id=smart-cure&#038;rank=1\">SMART-CURE<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>STUPID and RIDICULOUS are still up for grabs, though.<\/p>\n<p>Have we missed any clinical trial names that are hilariously appropriate (or inappropriate)?
