{"id":1930,"date":"2006-03-28T21:23:16","date_gmt":"2006-03-28T21:23:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/thescepticalchymist\/2006\/03\/acs-the-imperiali-code.html"},"modified":"2006-03-28T21:23:16","modified_gmt":"2006-03-28T21:23:16","slug":"acs_the_imperiali_code","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/thescepticalchymist\/2006\/03\/acs_the_imperiali_code.html","title":{"rendered":"ACS: The Imperiali Code"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/oasys2.confex.com\/acs\/231nm\/techprogram\/\">Ronald Breslow Award for Achievement in Biomimetic Chemistry <\/a>symposium given this afternoon in the <a href=\"https:\/\/oasys2.confex.com\/acs\/231nm\/techprogram\/\">Division of Organic Chemistry<\/a> recognized and honored the outstanding research accomplishments of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.mit.edu\/imperiali\/\">Barbara Imperiali <\/a>of <a href=\"https:\/\/web.mit.edu\/\"><span class=\"caps\">MIT<\/span><\/a>, in addition to featuring fantastic talks from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/cu\/chemistry\/fac-bios\/cornish\/group\/index.html\">Virginia Cornish<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scripps.edu\/cb\/cravatt\/\">Ben Cravatt<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cco.caltech.edu\/~dadgrp\/\">Dennis Dougherty<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Dougherty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.caltech.edu\/\">Caltech <\/a>recounted a very amusing but quite helpful trick taught to him by Professor Imperiali (from her days as a professor at Caltech) for remembering the 1-letter amino acid code of <a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/summary\/summary.cgi?cid=1148\">tryptophan<\/a>, W, which is to think of &#8220;twyptophan&#8221; (as if you were <a href=\"https:\/\/looneytunes.warnerbros.com\/web\/stars\/stars_elmer.jsp\">Elmer Fudd<\/a>).  Now I know I will never have future trouble remembering what \u201cW\u201d stands for!<\/p>\n<p>I wish I had a trick for remembering the 1-letter codes of <a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/summary\/summary.cgi?cid=738\">glutamine <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/summary\/summary.cgi?cid=611\">glutamic acid<\/a> (I\u2019m <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/\">Googling<\/a> this as I write, I\u2019m embarrassed to say, since I honestly can\u2019t remember which is which!).  Does anyone have any helpful tips for remembering these or any of the 1-letter amino acid codes?
