{"id":2171,"date":"2007-08-01T13:05:22","date_gmt":"2007-08-01T13:05:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/thescepticalchymist\/2007\/08\/enzymes-macrocycles-and-fluorescent-dyes-oh-my.html"},"modified":"2007-08-01T13:05:22","modified_gmt":"2007-08-01T13:05:22","slug":"enzymes_macrocycles_and_fluore","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.nature.com\/thescepticalchymist\/2007\/08\/enzymes_macrocycles_and_fluore.html","title":{"rendered":"Enzymes, macrocycles, and fluorescent dyes, oh my!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/nmeth\/journal\/v4\/n8\/index.html\">August issue <\/a>of <em>Nature Methods<\/em>, which just came out on Monday, we have an exciting and decidedly chemistry-based paper from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacobs-university.de\/schools\/ses\/wnau\/\">Werner Nau <\/a>and colleagues at Jacobs University Bremen in Germany (and it even made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/nmeth\/journal\/v4\/n8\/covers\/index.html\">cover<\/a>!). The authors describe a new concept for enzyme assays using a macrocycle as a receptor for a fluorescent dye and for an enzyme product. When the enzyme arrives on the scene and begins converting the substrate (which does not interact with the macrocycle) to product, the product starts displacing the fluorescent dye from the macrocycle, causing a switch-on in fluorescence.
