What do polymer chemists make of this, I wonder? Do they feel that they\u2019re being hived off for some reason? Or do they actually quite like having a venue more or less to themselves? If there are any polymer people out there that would like to comment on this, I\u2019d love to know.<\/p>\n<p>A sense of direction was never my strongest point, and so it was that I got lost on the way to the hotel where the polymer talks were being held (which was embarrassing, because the hotel is just around the corner from the Washington Conference Center). Arriving with seconds to spare, I found that someone had seriously miscalculated the size of the room needed for the afternoon session. As the chairperson, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrl.ucsb.edu\/hawker\/\">Craig Hawker<\/a>, commented, \u201cThis is the smallest lecture room <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cce.caltech.edu\/faculty\/grubbs\/\">Bob Grubbs<\/a> will ever lecture in.\u201d People were spilling out into the corridor, the air-con couldn\u2019t cope, and frankly I wasn\u2019t sure I\u2019d be able to stick it out for long.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately, a swap was arranged with another session, providing us with a room three times the size of the original one, which we instantly filled. More chairs were brought in, but by the end of the afternoon it was still standing room only.<\/p>\n<p>So why all the interest? Because it was a stellar line-up. Not just the aforementioned Bob Grubbs,  but also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chem.cmu.edu\/groups\/maty\/\">Krysztof Matyjaszewski<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chem.tamu.edu\/faculty\/faculty_detail.php?ID=34\">Dave Bergbreiter<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chem.tamu.edu\/faculty\/faculty_detail.php?ID=9003\">Karen Wooley<\/a>, to name but a few. There was too much good stuff to cover here, but I liked <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.warwick.ac.uk\/fac\/sci\/chemistry\/people\/academics\/rkoreilly\">Rachel O\u2019Reilly<\/a>\u2019s work making metal-lined nanocages (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org\/Publishing\/Journals\/sm\/index.asp\"><em>Soft Matter<\/em><\/a> subscribers can read about this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsc.org\/publishing\/journals\/SM\/article.asp?doi=b818955b\">here<\/a>); Craig Hawker\u2019s description of reactive polymers that have ketenes in their side-chains, which can be used for cross-linking or functionalization (the polymers can be used for microcontact printing applications); and Karen Wooley\u2019s tour de force about nanoparticles that carry <span class=\"caps\">DNA<\/span> plasmids into cells (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.elsevier.com\/wps\/find\/journaldescription.cws_home\/30392\/description#description\"><em>Biomaterials<\/em><\/a> subscribers can see some of this work <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science?_ob=ArticleURL&#038;_udi=B6TWB-4V11KK5-2&#038;_user=10&#038;_coverDate=02%2F28%2F2009&#038;_rdoc=33&#038;_fmt=high&#038;_orig=browse&#038;_srch=doc-info(%23toc%235558%232009%23999699994%23778065%23FLA%23display%23Volume)&#038;_cdi=5558&#038;_sort=d&#038;_docanchor=&#038;_ct=33&#038;_acct=C000050221&#038;_version=1&#038;_urlVersion=0&#038;_userid=10&#038;md5=3f5a10fdb5aa27b799f4f2b8219512cd\">here<\/a>). Karen is currently using nanostructures as building blocks for complex molecular assemblies, for example by decorating anionic nanocylinders with cationic nanospheres; the anionic cylinders won\u2019t enter cells, but they can do when coated with the cationic spheres. She\u2019s ultimately hoping that her nanostructures will be useful for therapies targeting lung injuries.<\/p>\n<p>I have to say that this was my favourite session of the meeting so far &#8211; the science was great, but there was also a genuine sense of camaraderie among the people in the room, with lots of interest in each talk demonstrated by the number of questions asked.
