Argentina’s Annual Ag Expo

During March 22-25 the main farming event in Argentina, Expoagro 2014, took place in Santa Fe state, and recent advances in agriculture and farming were highlighted. Farming is the main economic activity of Argentina, and biotechnology has played a central role in farm development and transitioning to a more precise form of agriculture. Local policies have allowed the use of genetically modified organisms, and that led to a green revolution in the 1990s, with incremental increases in productivity, as well as the development of fertilizers, biofuels, bioplastics and other by-products, all of which have significantly increased economic output levels per cultivated area.  Read more

Q&A: David Rabuka

I sat down with David Rabuka at the recent IBC Antibody Engineering and Therapeutics conference and discussed his entrepreneurial path. David is the founder and chief scientific officer of Redwood Bioscience, a startup company focused on antibody-drug conjugates and other semi-synthetic therapeutics. David started the company as a graduate student at UC Berkeley, where he earned a PhD in chemistry with professor Carolyn Bertozzi.  Read more

Bogotá, Colombia, the city from where the Spanish conquistadors pursued the mythical ‘El Dorado’, launched BioLatam 2013, the first Latin American biotechnology conference with an emphasis on partnering and business. The meeting took place December 9-10, and talk centred not on gold but on attracting investors and partners to the region. The conference itself, which might have been summarized as ‘Investors wanted’, was born of a bridge-building exercise between Invest in Bogotá, the city’s investment agency and Asebio, Spain’s biotechnology association.  Read more

Latin America's Biotech Meeting

The 8th REDBIO meeting took place a few days ago in Mar del Plata, a seaside city in Argentina. Under the slogan “Biotechnology and Society, conversation for a sustainable development,” the event pooled specialists from biotechnology areas to promote synergy between academics, government, industry and society. Argentina, still known as “the bread basket of the world,” is indeed a leader in transferring agricultural technologies abroad (see the recent Monthly Map).  Read more
