Did Darwin influence Mark Twain?

Borja Ormazábal of Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain will explore that question on Thursday night at Harvard. The event is sponsored by theThe Real Colegio Complutense, a collaboration betwee Harvard and the Spainish university.

Here’s a preview:

The Origin of Species challenged the popular belief that species could not evolve and argued that species can adapt to their environment and develop accordingly. These ideas changed the structure of religion and science as we know them and have had an impact on all kinds of writings. Mark Twain was not an exception, and the influence of Darwin’s determinism on his works, especially on his latest ones, is obvious, as the peculiar and humorous way in which the creator of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn depicts the controversy which spread through American society: the poor biblical Adam was going to lose his prominent role in human history.

The event starts at 7:30 at the RCC (conference room), 26 Trowbridge Street , Cambridge, MA
