Not often we showcase fine art on this blog, but today is an example of how science can be found anywhere: I present to you Jeune Fille Endormie by Pablo Picasso
This painting, a 1935 portrait by Picasso of his lover Marie-Thérèse Walter, which has been rarely seen in recent years, was donated by an anonymous American donor to the University of Sydney on the condition that it be sold to fund scientific research.
Last night, it was sold in London, at the auctioneer Christie’s Impressionist/Modern Evening Sale and raised almost £13.5m. University of Sydney Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence, was in London for the auction and said afterwards “The proceeds of the sale of the Picasso will go to a wonderful cause. They will create multiple endowed chairs across several disciplines within a new multidisciplinary University centre dedicated to research into obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.”
You can read more about what the university plans to do with the money at the University of Sydney website or see the rest of the art which raised a total of £140,019,200 at Christie’s last night.
