Summer science for the kids: Harvard Natural History Museum

Summer Science Weeks 2011

Spend a week of your summer at the museum. Through games, activities, and observation in the galleries, students will learn while having fun.

Time and Location

Monday through Friday, 9:30 am to noon at the Harvard Museum of Natural History

Fees

$160 nonmembers / $144 members (10% discount)

Registration

Class sizes are limited and advance registration is required. Email reservations@oeb.harvard.edu or call 617.495.2341 to register.

Cancellations

You may cancel up to two weeks before program and receive a refund less a $15 fee. After that time, no refund can be made. A full refund is issued if the museum cancels the program.

Never Say “Ugh” to a Bug

For students entering grades 1-2

Session A: July 11-15, 9:30 am to noon NEW

Session B: July 18-22, 9:30 am to noon

Join us for an in-depth investigation of insects, spiders, and other creepy-crawlies. Meet an African Millipede, watch a tarantula spin silk, and listen to the hiss of a giant cockroach. Enjoy the wonders of the exhibit Arthropods: Creatures that Rule and learn about exotic insects, local bugs, and fossilized creatures.

Nature’s Mysteries

Ages 4-5 with one adult

July 25-29, 9:30 am to noon

How do frogs eat? How do snakes slither? Together, children and adults will answer questions like these and explore nature. We’ll practice observation skills with live animals, explore the galleries, study touchable specimens, play games, and make crafts.

Animal Naturalists

Two sections: For students entering grades 3-4 and grades 5-7

August 1-5, 9:30 am to noon

Combine your love for animals and drawing in this art and science program. With a museum educator, investigate the lives of birds, mammals, insects, reptiles, and amphibians. With artist Erica Beade, draw these animals from the exhibitions and classroom specimens while practicing various drawing techniques. This class has an additional $10 materials fee.

Nature’s Designs

For students entering grades 2-4

August 8-12, 9:30 am to noon

Come observe the amazing natural world and create your own art work inspired by it. Activities include: investigate real habitats and design a superbug to live in them; explore fossils and design a dinosaur egg; wander the galleries of animals and construct your own costumes.

Megalodon, Smilodon, Pteranodon

For students entering grades 4-6

August 8-12, 9:30 am to noon

Investigate ancient worlds revealed through fossils. From million year old saber tooth cats to 500 million year old trilobites, we will closely study ancient specimens in the galleries and classroom, visit Harvard’s fossil research collections and meet a university paleontologist.
