Tenure not keeping up with number of biologists

Well, not the cheeriest of news for a Friday afternoon, but here it goes. This week’s Nature has an article about the not-so-bright future of biologists in academia. The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) has pulled together data showing that while the number of biomedical PhDs has grown, the number with tenure hasn’t since 1981.

The PhDs end up in industry: since the 1970s, the percentage of biomed PhDs going into industry has gone from 10 to 30 percent.
