Friday Quiz: The Life and Works of Isambard Kingdom Brunel

With a week of miserable weather (at least in the bit of London right outside my window), an interesting trip to take one weekend if it ever does stop raining and a quiz for when you get there.

The Brunel Museum in Rotherhithe was mentioned on this blog earlier this year when M@ took a tour of the ventilation shaft to the Thames Tunnel which was re-opened earlier this year after 140 years. The museum was one of the places taking part in the recent Open Gardens weekend and I went along to take a look.

A bench at the Brunel Museum, Rotherhithe, modelled on Brunel’s famous Clifton suspension bridge.

As well as the shaft and the museum, the Museum had opened up the roof garden which sits on top of the Grand Entrance Hall, and which is laid out like a compass, featuring a huge sundial in the centre and four benches at the four compass points.

So, for your Friday afternoon quiz: each bench is decorated with a plaque commemorating a different Isambard Kingdom Brunel project. The four plaques are below: can you identify the projects? For a little help, you might want to start by brushing up on the difference between "Marc Isambard Brunel (the dad) ":https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marc_Isambard_Brunel and Isambard Kingdom Brunel (the son). The Brunel Museum is open 7 days a week, 10am – 5pm with late night opening on Tuesdays. Frequent special events are held including guided walks on Tuesday evenings. The Museum is less than five minutes walk from Rotherhithe tube station and a short walk from Canada Water and Surrey Quays tubes.
