Celebrating Science Online NYC’s first birthday!

It’s SoNYC’s first birthday! Come and celebrate in the Big App-le.

The first Science Online NYC (SoNYC) took place on April 20th 2011 which means it’s almost our first birthday! To celebrate, we’d like to continue with our theme of maximum audience participation and invite you to an ‘appy hour and a half with a difference.

On May 2nd at 7pm, we’re going to host an open mic night at Rockefeller University, where you get the chance to share your favourite app, website, or project. Take 5 full minutes in the spotlight to showcase something that makes carrying out or communicating science online easier or more fun for you, then enjoy a drink and some birthday cake while hearing about what your fellow attendees find compelling. We’ll limit the presentations to 90 minutes in total to allow time for the usual networking afterwards.

You don’t have to present a product to participate, but if you’re keen to impart some inspiration, please email (jtimmer@arstechnica.com)  to let us know your plans so that we can create a schedule, avoid duplications, and make sure that we have everything in place for your demo. No sales pitches, please, just honest enthusiasm! Please also sign up as usual via our Eventbrite page as this will allow us to ensure that we have enough cake for everyone.

Stay tuned here for some retrospectives about our first year or check out the archives of all the previous events that we’ve hosted, including Storifys of the tweets and preview posts discussing some of the topics in more detail.

We hope to celebrate with you in person or online in May!

John, Jeanne, Joe and Lou
