What does Indian science represent to you?

By Alex Jackson on 15 Sep 2014

Nature India recently challenged photographers across the globe to provide their stories and perspectives through a stunning image and short description encapsulating science and technology in India.

There has been a diverse range of entries with a distinct flair for photography and fascinating personal tales. Over the course of the next two weeks, Nature India will be sharing the best seven images and encouraging people to share and like on social media.

The inaugural photo competition judges entries on their novelty, creativity and quality. Once all seven have been rolled out across social media, the Nature India editors and design team will pick their favourite based on the engagement and reception each has received from the online science community.

“Science in India is seeing new resurgence – scientific research and publications increasing significantly in the past decade,” says Nature India Editor, Subhra Priyadarshini. “Add to that the unique and rich culture and landscape of India, which provides some of the most visually appealing backdrops for pictures. It was the combination of these two that made us think of a photo competition, a challenge that could capture the evolving scene of science and technology in India, a country poised to be a global super power yet fighting issues of poverty, healthcare and education.

“We received close to 50 entries from across the world — overwhelming I would say considering the challenging subject. Some of the entries truly stand out in terms of juxtaposing the ‘India’ and ‘science’ elements. Some are visually brilliant and some conceptually. We will try to do justice in selecting the best from among such a lovely set of photos.”

The winning entry will be featured on the cover of one of Nature India’s forthcoming publications. The winner and two runners-up will receive a copy of the Nature India Special Annual volume and a bag of goodies from Nature Publishing Group.

The first image and story of the week can be found over on Nature India’s Indigenus blog. Please like and share with the hashtag #NatureIndphoto.

The winner and two runners-up will be announced on the 29th September.
