An Oscar to prop up next to the Harvard diploma

Move over C-3PO. Amadala has a new gold guy.

In the Oscar winning movie “The Social Network,” one of the characters rattles off a list of Nobel prize winners and other Harvard luminaries, including “a movie star.” While she went unnamed, that would be Natalie Portman, who we spent 4 years trying to spot so my young son could see a real-live Star Wars character.

The NYTimes reports on Harvard grad/Oscar winner Natalie Portman’s smarts.

On Sunday night, the gorgeously pregnant Natalie Portman, 29, won an Oscar for her performance as Nina, a mentally precarious ballerina in the shock fantasy “Black Swan.” Among the lesser-known but nonetheless depressingly impressive details in Ms. Portman’s altogether too precociously storied career is that as a student at Syosset High School on Long Island back in the late 1990s, Ms. Portman made it all the way to the semifinal rounds of the Intel competition…

Yet there’s more. While carrying out her investigation into a new, “environmentally friendly” method of converting waste into useful forms of energy, and maintaining the straight-A average she’d managed since grade school, Ms. Portman already was a rising movie star….She took on the major role of Queen Amidala in the Star Wars prequel trilogy that rocketed her to international fame. And then she went on to Harvard University to study neuroscience and the evolution of the mind.

Another Ivy League grad, Jody Foster, got her Oscar before her Yale degree. Prinecton grad Brooke Shields has yet to win one and "Emma Watson ":https://www.boston.com/ae/celebrity/more_names/blog/2009/09/emma_watson_at_brown_universit.html?p1=Well_MostPop_Emailed1 of Harry Potter fame is still at Brown. We wonder if she is sick of hearing cracks comparing her smarts to Hogwarts teacher’s pet Hermione Granger.

We never did run into her and they say Portman was able to maintain some anonymity. But, she didn’t completely abandon the stage, even if it was the stage at Cambridge Ringe and Latin High School .A friend says her son was watching a Star Wars movie one day and recognized his teacher from City Step, a dance program Harvard students run in the Cambridge Public Schools. (Oscar-nominated home-boy Casey Affleck was a City Step student.) Oh, Ah.
