Monday
Skeptics in the Pub rolls round again. This month’s gathering of the rational, skeptical and evidence-hungry takes place at the Monarch Pub in Camden from 7.30pm (£2). The speakers, in an evening subtitled ‘Warriors Against Claptrap’, are all from Sense About Science, a prominent campaign group for the promotion of good reporting of the sciences.
Tuesday
Head over to the Hunterian Museum at lunch (1pm) for a talk entitled How To Lose A Museum. Sam Alberti explores the ‘lost’ medical museums of London, highlighted in the Hunterian’s current exhibition, which I r"eviewed last week":https://blogs.nature.com/london/2011/03/02/lost-museums-nature-and-medicine-on-show. Entry is £3 and you need to book in advance.
UCL has its own lunchtime lecture, with a look at genetic screening to select the ‘best’ offspring. The talk starts at 1.15pm and entrance is free.
A THIRD lunchtime event sees Professor Martin Barstow talk at the Royal Astronomical Society (Burlington House) on the trials and tribulations of a team of scientists preparing a small space telescope for launch. Oddly (given that it appears to be about astronomy rather than rocketry) titled ‘How to be a rocket scientist’, the talk begins at 1pm and appears to be free.
In the evening, the Zoological Society of London have a free event (no booking required) entitled Climate change in Africa: more than melting icebergs and drowning polar bears. That starts at 6pm.
Wednesday
The Dana Centre revisits age-old territory tonight, with a look at dreams. A panel of psychoanalysts discuss what insights our nightly mental adventures can offer on the workings of the mind. Prebook for this free talk, which begins at 7pm.
Thursday
Fun and games this evening, as Skeptics in the Pub host their second event of the week. Improbable Research After Dark brings together Marc Abrahams of Ig Nobel Prize fame with sci-com luminaries such as Ed Yong, David Dobbs, Jenny Rohn, Chris McManus and Palab Ghosh for an evening of dramatically read highlights from the Ig Nobel awards. The event takes place at the Core Restaurant in the Paddington area, and tickets are £5 (prebook).
