“What the deuce is that?” you’ll find yourself puzzling again and again (assuming you all have the same habit of exclaiming in high Victorian as I do). Winners of the Wellcome Image Awards, now in their tenth year, are on display at Wellcome Collection from today.

Like anything in this building, variety is a watchword. Along side the expected electron micrographs of cellular structure, you’ll also find a portrait of a Nobel laureate (Harold Kroto), a three-dimensional video of an embryonic mouse, commputer art showing tiny scientists literally tinkering with DNA, and a photo of a Tibetan doctor clutching his precious medical tomes.

My favourite is this picture of drug particles (coloured orange) inside polymer shells (in blue), which protect the drug from acidic stomach conditions. The picture is by Annie Cavanagh and Dave McCarthy of University College, London.

The 19 winners are on display in a special gallery on the first floor until next spring. Non-Londoners, or those too lazy to visit can view all the images online.

Also, the Exquisite Bodies exhibition at Wellcome closes on Sunday. Make sure you go. It really is special.
