It is with some excitement and nervousness that I write the first test post on this new blog. We decided that it might be fun and useful for us Nature Protocols editors to have a place to write news about our content, and other stuff that might be relevant to Nature Protocols readers, and of course stuff that we as editors of Nature Protocols think is fun.
This first post, apart from being a test to see if the whole thing works, is also to ask a very important question:
What should we call our blog?
We have kicked the question around a little between us.
I am all for something straightforward like “Nature Protocols Blog”.
Dot on the other hand has suggested something more literary, perhaps “Method in the Madness” (quoting from Hamlet) though perhaps it will be more like “Madness in the Method”
Chris went all gothic and went for “The Laboratory Grimoire”.
Hannah suggested “Memoirs of a Protocolian” and is now regretting it. While Sam, who is certainly the most creative of our editorial team, hasn’t thrown her hat into the ring yet.
I am sure that you all have load of ideas, considerably better than ours! So tells us about them in the comment thread.
With many thanks and best wishes for all your experiments!
Bronwen
What about “Modus Operandi” ?
I like “The Laboratory Grimoire”.
Welcome to our blog, Bob and Loraine!
“Modus operandi” or (a variation thereof) is an excellent suggestion.
“The Laboratory Grimoire” – 2 points
Everything else – 1 point each
(so far)
First Among Protocols
The First Protocol
These sound quite thriller-ish I think and I would check in just to make sure someone hasn’t shot the president. Then I’d stay, entranced by the minutiae of methodological wetware (far more interesting!)
Welcome, Maxine! Thanks for the suggestions (especially like “First among Protocols”), and for tweeting about our cause! I cannot imagine that anything we had to say would beat a good thriller… but, one never can tell.
Talking of twitter… One of the NatureProtocols twitter followers, “DoNotGoGently” (https://twitter.com/DoNotGoGently) has made a few suggestions as well. Of these “Beats Doing Benchwork” pleased me somehow.
Or maybe, Better than Benchwork (?)
Beat at the Bench. (I’m getting carried away here!)
Am smiling. When I read “Beat at the bench”, I imagined something hitting the head against it in frusration. Following on that theme, what about: “The Bench Beat”? Could imagine having a logo with someone using marker pens as drumsticks against something that looks like the edge of a bench. Now, I’m getting carried way!
I can’t believe nobody has said ‘Benchmark’ yet.
Hi Richard,
Unfortunately, someone else got there first!
Please do keep the suggestions coming, though!
Dot
Yahbut, that one’s plural. My suggestion’s deliberately singular, to give a quite different impression.
Ha! How remiss of me not to notice! But do you think a single ‘s’ (or lack thereof) will be enough to fool the lawyers? I’ve heard they’re much more sensitive to these things than us editors.
Lawyers?? Pfft.
I get the impression that lawyers are sensitive to time to pay a job. When consulting at me for making for an report XXXYYYY at the moment of pay my fees are very sensitive.
I’m not one to suggest upsetting people with lawers either.
I think its best to keep the name of this simple so people dont have to think too much to understand what you are trying to say with the title. I feel sometimes when people get too technican and symbolic with their logos and names they lose touch with the people they’re serving/talking to.
Just my two cents!
