I want my, I want my CNT TV

Ever since carbon nanotubes were first reported in Nature in 1991 by Sumio Iijima, there has been an awful lot of speculation about what they are (or will be) good for. Proposed applications range from molecular electronics, biomedical uses such as drug delivery, through to the lofty goal of a space elevator!

Well, move over CRT TV, step aside LCD TV, here comes CNT TV… an American and a Taiwanese company have joined forces and announced a venture to develop and manufacture carbon nanotube-based TVs.

Money for nothing?

  1. Long live the Sceptical Chymist, though I would have spelled it Chemyst(ery).

My only advice at this point to the powers that be is to get off the friggin’ template. Do more than just cover the same predictable, and presumably popular, subjects. Enrich the brew with a richer array of nutritional ideas. Magnetism, topology, spintronics, you name it. Anything that provides for a richer set of connections.

  2. fwiw, I saw Samsung’s prototype CNT TV display at NT’99 in Lansing, MI, with perhaps 60-70 attendees from around the world. My how times do change. To say that the breadboard display made a lasting impression, is an understatement. I met the gentleman again back in October, and he told me that they hope to be rolling out their first commercial sets sometime this year. (He still has the prototype proudly displayed in his office.)

  3. Thanks bioqubit – we hope to be as diverse as possible on this blog, and cover a wide range of subjects… give us a chance, we’re only five entries in! Keep checking back, and find out if we’re living up to your expectations, and feel free to let us know if we’re not… – Stuart (and Rick – thanks for the insight on CNT TV)
