Space photos: a volcano collapses and a window opens

Today we have two great pictures from space for your delectation.

First up: the dome of the Soufrière Hills Volcano on the island of Montserrat suffered a partial collapse on 11 February. NASA’s Aqua satellite snapped this picture of the Caribbean island shortly after (full image left, detail right).

During the hour-long collapse, a plume of debris was sent 15,000 metres into the sky and pyroclastic flows swept out hundreds of metres into the sea, says NASA.

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory has pictures of the dome collapse from the ground. If you’ve got time to kill, the feed of the MODIS instrument on Aqua is always worth a browse.

Meanwhile, the shutters have been opened on the newly installed ‘cupola’ window on the International Space Station. This picture was sent back to Earth by Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi, aka The Space Tweeter. Noguchi also has a volcano photo for your viewing pleasure.
