February’s SoNYC: On Science and Social Media – Introduction

February’s Science Online NYC (SoNYC) co-organised by nature.com, is a super social media week special event at the American Museum of Natural History!  You can join us on Thursday February 16th in person, or online via the social media week livestream to discuss Beyond a Trend: Enhancing Science Communication with Social Media:

As a communications tool, social media is an undeniably effective way to enhance your message. But within the science realm, top communicators – both academic and professional – strive to use social media for something greater: to engage the public in a conversation about science. Never before has it been so easy for researchers, public information officers, educators, students, and journalists to talk directly to the public about the benefits, limits, and implications of scientific knowledge. Social media not only makes these meaningful conversations possible, but it often also makes them fun and compelling. During this session, hear from scientists, communicators, and educators who use social media tools and the philosophy behind them to find creative, collaborative, and engaging learning opportunities.

This month’s panel:

– American Museum of Natural History educators who are developing a “tool kit” of mobile apps, websites and more to help middle school students collect, share and present data on urban biodiversity

– Ben Lillie, the co-organizer of The Story Collider, which tells science stories by combining verbal narratives with podcasts, Twitter and an online magazine

– Matt Danzico, a BBC journalist who conducted a 365-day blog experiment called “The Time Hack” looking at how we perceive time

– Carl Zimmer, a science journalist whose latest book, Science Ink: Tattoos of the Science Obsessed, is based on feedback he received on his Discover Magazine blog when he asked the question: are scientists hiding tattoos of their science?

– Moderator: Jennifer Kingson, day assignment editor, Science Department, The New York Times

Continuing the discussion 

To prepare for the upcoming discussion, we’re running a series of guest posts here on Of Schemes and Memes, recounting experiences where social media has been a key part of an education project.

The advent of social media has seen the birth of wider online initiatives aiming to engage the public with science. For example: the BBC’s So you want to be a scientist, a weekly science show that turns science ideas into real-life experiments, I am a scientist get me out of here (IAS), an X-factor style competition where students talk to scientists online for 2 weeks and vote for their favourite scientist, and Google’s Science Fair, the largest global online science competition. These projects aim to disseminate science effectively to wider audiences and celebrate the curiosity of young scientists. In our upcoming guest posts we will feature anecdotes from the participants of such projects as well as hear from an academic using social media as part of a university course, and consider the future of social media as an aid for learning.

The three scientists sharing their personal experiences are:

Dr Alan Cann from Leicester University. He will be giving an academic’s viewpoint on how social media can be used as part of the curriculum. His post considers how the effects of social media usage can be measured and what the future holds for such technology in the classroom.

– Dr Tom Crick, a senior lecturer in Computer Science, will talk about his experiences with the IAS competition, including a personal take on how he uses social media to aid learning.

– Ben Lillie, co-organizer of The Story Collider and one of the SoNYC panellists, will discuss how he uses social media to organise events and engage people online.

  • Veronique Kiermer is an Executive Editor and Head of Researcher Services at Nature, and a member of the ORCID steering committee.
  • Cathy Norton is the library scholar at the Biodiversity Heritage Library at Woods Hole’s Marine Biological Laboratory.

As is our usual format, following short introductory talks from the panelists, we invited attendees present in person at Rockefeller University or watching online to take part in a wider discussion.

To celebrate our love of both science and music we’ve created an online advent calendar

Check back each day in the approach to Christmas to reveal a new YouTube video which alludes to a science story from 2011. Can you guess which story we’re referring to? Leave your answers in the comments, or tweet using the hashtag #yuletubecalendar.

AIDS day

World AIDS Day took place yesterday and provides an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV. In order to mark World AIDS Day, Boston blogger, Tinker Ready, has been updating her readers on local events. SONYC!

Make sure you join us this Thursday 8th December either in person at Rockefeller University from 7pm EST, or online via our Livestream channel for the seventh SONYC! The theme is, matching medium and messengers to meet the masses.

Attracting and maintaining an audience outside the core of science enthusiasts requires a carefully crafted match of the medium and messenger. Reaching an audience that’s already interested in science is relatively straightforward; however, reaching a broader audience can be challenging. This week’s SONYC will deliberate when and how scientists and science communicators should highlight science issues to the general public. Should we be ready to respond and correct public misunderstandings or attempt to influence science policy?

The Panelists include:

• Darlene Cavalier, the woman behind the Science Cheerleaders.

• Jamie Vernon, a science policy analyst and co-organiser of a recent video on teaching evolution in schools.

• Molly Webster, lead producer for live programming at the World Science Festival.

FameLab

FameLab, set up in 2005 by Cheltenham Science Festival, is an international competition for science communicators and the last heats took place this week at Kings College London. A winner and a wildcard from each heat made the final on Wednesday. Nature Network London has been featuring interviews with the winners and wildcards. First up was wildcard and Imperial PhD student, Ned Yoxall. Next we heard from Babraham Institute PhD student, Harry Armstrongand. Finally a few thoughts from Harry Cliff of the High Energy Physics group at the University of Cambridge:

Hello, Harry, congratulations on making the FameLab final! Tell us a bit about what you presented and why you picked it.

I talked about bottoms and how they hold the secret to the existence of the Universe. Bottom quarks that is, tiny particles which are produced in huge numbers at the Large Hadron Collider. Particle physicists are interested in them because they can teach as a great deal about the differences between matter and antimatter. One of the great unsolved problems of particle physics and cosmology is why matter and antimatter weren’t made in equal quantities at the Big Bang. If that had happened we wouldn’t be here today as the two should have annihilated each other leaving a cold, dark and empty Universe. Bottom quarks offer an exciting opportunity to study the phenomenon known as “charge-parity symmetry violation”, which is needed to explain why matter was created in greater abundance than antimatter.

FameLab

FameLab, set up in 2005 by Cheltenham Science Festival, is the international competition for science communicators and this week the London heats have begun! Kings College London is the venue for the heats, with a winner and a wildcard from each heat making the final next Wednesday. Over the next few days, Nature Network London will feature interviews with the winners and wildcards. First up is wildcard and Imperial PhD student, Edward Yoxall:

How did you become interested in communication and have you ever done anything like this before?

I’ve never done anything like FameLab, but I guess I’ve always enjoyed being on stage. Gives you such a rush! I’ve been working for the BBC on the ‘Bang Goes the Theory’ roadshow as a science demonstrator, so that’s been pretty good practice for speaking in front of crowds. It’s also been good at making me pitch at the right level – finding the balance between complexity and simplicity is definitely one of the hardest parts of the job.

Nature Outlook: Allergies

The increased prevalence of allergies and asthma, especially in the developed world, has raised the stakes in the quest for prevention and cure. In light of this, the latest Nature Outlook supplement is all about allergies. Nature Network blogger Paige Brown features in the supplement with her article, Atopy: Marching with allergies, where she details her lifelong struggles with allergic disorders and hyper-reactivity:

My mother, herself allergy-prone, remembers my inflamed and itchy skin lesions in infancy. These are classic symptoms of atopic eczema, better known in the United States as atopic dermatitis. Then, in my toddler years, as my father recounts, I started to show “this peculiar reaction” around animals, scratching at my throat as my eyes went red, watery and swollen. These typical symptoms of allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, owe their origins to human immune-system responses to specific protein allergens, for example those found in animal dander:

It is question time

This week NatureNews have been asking via their brand new Facebook page, “Who owns your lab notebook?” In response to a legal dispute about missing notebooks in Nevada, some have wondered whether most working scientists even know who technically owns their lab notebooks. So, for the working scientists out there, is it clear that the research notes you take generally belong to the institution you work for? You can respond to their FB poll here and make sure you “like” them to keep updated on the latest news.

For those interested in Nature’s other social media presences, we also have a Twitter list cataloguing all of our NPG Twitter accounts and we also have a Google + circle featuring all the NPG Google+ pages. This circle will be continuously updated as and when accounts are created.

We would like to wish a warm welcome to a new blog which began on the Scitable blogging network this week. The Promethean Cell will track ongoing issues and research in the regenerative medicine fields and will occasionally be interspersed with anecdotes from a fledgling postdoc’s career. Ada Ao, a postdoctoral research fellow at Vanderbilt University, explains more about her new blog:

Now that I’ve declaimed from my soapbox, what exactly will I blog about? The possibilities are endless. Recent discoveries in the stem cell field are incredibly exciting. This blog will encompass issues like basic biology, opinions and views, and where we may go next in terms of applicable therapeutics. I’m really aiming to put together the “big picture”.

Neuroblogging

Neuroscience 2011 has been this year’s major event for neuroscientists from around the globe. Organised by the Society for Neuroscience (SfN), the event took place from November 12th – 16th, in Washington, DC. To tie in with this, some of the attendees have been sharing their observations from the event in an exclusive series of guest posts on NPG’s Neuroscience blog, Action Potential.

When and how should scientists and science communicators seek to highlight science issues to the general public? Should we be ready to respond and correct public misunderstandings or attempt to influence science policy? What material can be handled through social media, and what requires a more involved form of engagement, such as a science festival?

This month’s panel has experience communicating with everyone from young kids to policymakers, and will discuss what they’ve learned about using different spokespeople and platforms to get their message out. The panel includes:

Our first installment from Jeanne Garbarino, a Postdoc at Rockefeller University, considered some of the underrepresented groups within science. In our second installment, Mónica I. Feliú-Mójer discussed her role as the vice-director of Ciencia Puerto Rico, a non-profit, grassroots organization that promotes science, research and scientific literacy in Puerto Rico. Our third post was from Subhra Priyadarshini, editor of Nature Publishing Group’s India portal who talked about life for scientists in India. In our forth post we heard from Satoshi Uchiyama, a Japanese researcher working abroad, as he details his career hurdles and visa issues. In our next post, Amanda Adeleye, a medical student discusses how the glamorous world of cheerleading can mix with science.

Marie Curie, the first person to be honored with two Nobel prizes both in chemistry and physics once said, “be less curious about people and more curious about ideas.” Rather than perseverating on what stereotyped roles women ought to follow, whether as mothers, writers, dancers, artists or nurturers, we ought to focus on what we, as women, are able to do. In fact, the options are limitless.

During college, I double majored in biology and classics – the study of ancient Greek and Roman texts and philosophy – and simultaneously was an NFL cheerleader for the St. Louis Rams. I have been asked to write about this experience as well as my current thoughts on being a Science Cheerleader. Overall, cheerleading has been an incredibly rewarding experience, as has completing bench research on breast cancer, graduating college, and working my way through medical school. Each activity is a part of me, a part of my identity but in no way completes me. I am often asked what its like to have been in both worlds, what is generally considered the very glamorous world of cheerleading, and the world of science. Truthfully, I could not imagine it any other way, and more importantly, why it would be any other way.

Luckily, movements like Science Cheerleader are excellent ways to bridge this unspoken divide between women and science. According to the National Science Foundation in 2009, while women made up 48.9% of the biological and life science work force, and 33.1% of the physicians, we were a mere 10.7% of engineering workforce. Without burdening you with statistics, there does exist a persistent gender gap in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields. The question is “why?” Some would argue that women are discouraged from these fields throughout elementary school and secondary school and that there several negative reinforcing messages to young women regarding these careers. Specifically, there are those out there who feel that activities like cheerleading focus on looks, dancing and popularity at the expense of “being smart.” There are some who wonder how can you be smart and a cheerleader. I think the subliminal question is “how can you be smart and a woman?” While you would be hard pressed to find a politically correct individual who would admit to these prejudices, they exist and are often perceived by our young women. However, my feeling is that these prejudices do not come from a place of malice but rather ignorance.

Science Cheerleader is a wonderful and multifaceted way to spread knowledge and battle some of the ignorance that exists about women in science. First, it brings to the forefront this contrast between cheerleaders and scientists (that really should not be a contrast at all). In my time as a science cheerleader, I have met incredible women who are NASA engineers, or women attaining PhDs in chemistry and psychology, or science teachers themselves. Importantly, the guests that interact with Science Cheerleaders have the opportunity to meet these amazing women as well. Second, and very close to my heart, is the way that Science Cheerleaders are able to reach out to girls and young women at such an impressionable time in their lives. They may initially be attracted by the shiny pom-poms, big smiles, big boots and fun music, but they stay because they learn and they get excited about science. It’s a small way to remind people that science is for all citizens of the world and that it does not have to be some activity relegated to textbooks at the back of the library that no one goes to read. Rather, science can be a present and beautiful force in our everyday lives. Third, as my life drifts farther and farther into the world of medicine, Science Cheerleader has been a wonderful opportunity for me to continue to dance, cheer, make friends and make a difference. Ultimately, beyond admiring Marie Curie for all of her work, I believe she was wise to appreciate early on that it is not particularly important who we are, but it’s what we do, the power in our minds that we use to imagine, create and discover.
